Social justice

We campaign for equality, fairness and inclusion.

Housing

Essential works with the Community Housing Industry Association to make social housing more available, helping to design and execute the ‘Confront the Crisis’ campaign that put housing on the top of the agenda in the run-up to the 2023 State Election.

In partnership with Per Capita’s Centre for Equitable Housing we launched their Housing Monitor – a major quantitative project to benchmark attitudes to housing.

We designed, incubated and launched the national Everybody’s Home campaign and supported it through its early years.

First Nations

Essential has worked with Aboriginal Legal Services, the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, the Kimberley Land Council, and the National Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children (SNAICC).

Currently, Essential delivers media and strategic communications support for the Coalition of Peaks, the representative body of more than 80 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled peaks.

We also delivered a large community engagement program for Yes23, running more than 60 community Town Halls to build understanding, recruit volunteers and donors.

Equality

Essential designed the Australian Human Rights Commission’s successful ‘Racism. It stops with me’ campaign.

We were a research and communications partner to ACOSS in the development and launch of the “Raise the Rate’ campaign.

We have also delivered media and strategic communications support for Equality Australia.

Gendered violence

Essential supported Rosie Batty through her time as Australian of the Year and helped design and deliver her Never Alone campaign.

We have also worked on a variety of family violence and gender campaigns including for Women’s Legal Services and the Victorian Women’s Trust.

Caring economy

We campaign for a care economy that provides high quality support to every Australian regardless of who they are.

Early learning

Essential helped the Minderoo Foundation design and deliver the Thrive by Five campaign which has put early childhood at the top of the national political agenda and delivered over $70 billion in new funding since 2020.

Our work in early learning now spans various initiatives across the broader sector including for many of Thrive by Five’s partners such as The Parenthood and SNAICC. Previously, Essential helped Good Start Early Learning with the Smart Start campaign.

Older Australians

Essential is a long-term media and strategic communications partner of COTA Australia, Australia’s leading advocate for older Australians. COTA has been at the centre of every major step forward on aged care and age discrimination over the last decade.

We also were a critical support to the non-profit aged care industry through the pandemic and Royal Commission, delivering support to the national peak Aged and Community Services Australia.
